Fall Weekend Wedding Itinerary

Real French's Point oceanfront Maine wedding | Chris Bennett Photography

Here in Maine, Fall wedding celebrations have become increasingly common, and now rival the summer season for the most sought-after wedding dates. We’re seeing the same trends here at French’s Point. Our seaside location makes us the perfect spot to take in the crisp salt air and brilliant fall foliage that autumn in Maine offers.

According to The Knot, the traditionally popular month of June still attracts a sizeable 13% of annual US wedding celebrations with its lush, vibrant florals and beautiful weather and comfortable temperatures.  But the Month of October now comes in third, hosting 12% of all weddings annually with it bright foliage and lovely weather.  November is also rising in popularity here at French’s Point for the same reason.

It’s easy to see why so many couples choose a fall event. Steaming mugs of hot apple cider, cozy conversations by the bonfire, impromptu games of flag football, and hay wagon rides evoke their favorite and memorable fall experiences. A long, fall weekend makes for a relaxed, unhurried celebration. It’s no wonder couples are choosing to get married in Maine at this time of year.

Sample Fall Maine Wedding Weekend Itinerary

Here’s one sample itinerary that will keep your guests well fed, comfortably cozy, and thoroughly entertained while they enjoy all the quintessential elements of fall in New England:

Thursday

  • 6:00 p.m. Fire up the barbecue grill and enjoy burgers and brats and sample fall-inspired local beers like Marshall Wharf Brewing Company’s Danny McGovern’s Oatmeal Stout, Geary’s Autumn Ale and Shipyard Pumpkinhead with your family and friends as they roll into town to join you for the weekend.

  • 3:00 p.m. A bluegrass band sets the mood as guests arrive by trolley to mingle and enjoy hot mulled cider on the terrace.

  • 4:00 p.m. Congrats to the happy couple! Take your first photos as husband and wife, with your wedding party and family. Your guests will mix and mingle while they enjoy cocktail hour with delicious drinks and hors d’oeuvres on the terrace, take a stroll on the bluff path, take in the commanding view of the foliage on the shores of the bay from our signature Grand Daddy Adirondack chairs, or play a rousing game of cornhole on the oceanfront lawn.
  • Before the dinner reception begins, gather your guests and snap some group photos on the cobblestone terrace. This is a beautiful record of the guests who were able to join you for your big day.
  • 5:00 p.m. Guests are ushered inside the beautiful and cozy Retreat House Dining Room or the Sailcloth Tent Structure for the reception with tables set with all the details you imagined.
  • Catch the beautiful sunset with your new spouse and photographer. We offer a variety of locations to capture this splendid light of the setting sun and rising Harvest Moon.

  • 7:00 p.m. Cake and coffee are served.
  • 9:55 p.m. Enjoy one last dance with your sweetie for the perfect ending to a magical day!
  • 10:00 p.m. Move the party to The Retreat House to enjoy an unplugged after party with a laid-back vibe.  Fuel the fun with delicious late-night wood-fired pizza with fall flavors like roasted butternut squash and ricotta, and spicy sausage and apple. Snuggle in front of the fire as you recount the adventures of the day.
  • 12:00 a.m. Bid your guests farewell and retreat to your beautiful suite with your new spouse to reflect and celebrate this magical day. Vendors begin preparing for the next day’s celebrations.

Sunday

  • 9:00 a.m- 11a.m. Your guests can stop by The Retreat Dining Room one last time to say goodbye and enjoy a farewell brunch before heading home. Enjoy a beautiful, hearty buffet for a more formal affair, or offer portable food and coffee to-go so guests can get on the road after they bid you farewell.
  • 12:00 p.m. Sit in the Grand Daddy Adirondack chairs on the Bluff Path one last time to soak it all in.
  • 1:00 p.m. Check out time. Pack up your gifts, snap one last picture to immortalize the experience, and hit the road. It’s time for your next adventure!

*Due to the Coast Guard sound ordinance and zoning restrictions, all amplified music must cease at 10:00 p.m and exterior lights extinguish at midnight.

Real Review: Recommend Without Reservation

Abbey & Jacob_an MacLellan and Emma Scudder Photography - Real Review of French's Point_Coastal Maine Wedding Venue

My husband and I got married here in July, and could not be more thankful we chose French’s Point. From the very beginning to end, the owners and staff were exceptionally professional, organized, and available for suggestions, questions, and concerns. Most importantly, they are genuinely kind-hearted people who don’t just run a business — they clearly find joy in serving their clients.

The venue itself is exactly as pictured — views are breathtaking, property is beautifully maintained (by the entire family  and is overall just… so peaceful.

We rented the both the Farm House & Retreat for the weekend and all our guests couldn’t stop raving about the accommodations, quality of service, and venue as a whole. We recommend without reservation!

The second level of the Retreat House now offers four newly renovated suites with en suite bathrooms and six total bedrooms on this floor. Suite 4- The Brewer Family Suite, offers a two-bedroom configuration with a queen in each room with an adjoining bath. Our family LOVES this space and we hope other families do too. The Retreat House Top-Level Apartment: The Brooks Family Nest

The Retreat House Top Level Apartment: The Brooks Family Nest at French's Point - Coastal Maine Wedding Venue and Vacation Home Rental

As we do almost every winter, the season was spent completing a number of major maintenance and repair projects to keep our beautiful buildings and grounds in top working order. We also completed a major renovation to the bedroom suites on the second and third floors of the Retreat House.

The Top Level Apartment

We updated and refurbished the Top-Level Apartment in the Retreat House to offer it as as cozy nest to guests, with an impressive view of the bay. My parents, Bob and Bonnie made this apartment home for eight years. They hosted many a family dinner, had slumber parties with their grandchildren in the large closets under the eaves of the roofline that they dubbed the “Hobbit Holes” and rested their weary heads after long days of love poured into the property. They loved the gentle breezes, the sound of the rain on the roof and the incredible sunrises and sunsets. My mother lovingly refers to this space as “The Nest”. I think this name is quite appropriate. This winter, they moved just down the road to the Beach Rose Cottage located next to the Farm House with my sweet Grandmama, making way for guests to enjoy this charming apartment.

The privacy that this space offers will give our bridal parties a place to gather, relax and prepare on the wedding day with an open concept kitchen, dining and living space and a waterfront fireplace parlor with a beautiful deck with broad ocean views which is perfect to enjoy a wedding day brunch and watch as the setting below comes to life for your wedding. Just inside from the balcony, the parlor has beautiful natural light and is the perfect place for your hair and make-up artists to set up shop on your wedding day. In the parlor is a tiny sink which was my grandfather, Edgar’s. He loved antiques and saw the beauty in the forgotten. It is a sweet little detail in this space. There are two large, elegant king bedroom suites on this floor as well with sitting areas, beautiful bathrooms and private balconies looking to the east and west. You are going to love the cozy setting, gorgeous views and soothing privacy that the top floor offers you and your nearest and dearest!

We will share the details of the other Retreat House Suites & enhancements in upcoming posts. We hope you love them as much as we do.

“It’s Not Easy Being Green” – The Retreat at French’s Point

The Green Retreat Building of French's Point on the Coast of Maine for Weddings and Vacation Rental

In the spirit of Saint Patrick’s Day and all things green, we share sentiments from our favorite frog about our big, old, beautiful Retreat building

Cuppa Photography - Green Retreat Building at French's Point - Weddings and Vacation Rentals in Maine

It’s not that easy being green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold-
or something much more colorful like that.

It’s not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things.
And people tend to pass you over ’cause you’re not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water-
or stars in the sky.

But green’s the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like the ocean, or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree.

It’s not that easy being green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold-
or something much more colorful like that.

It’s not easy being green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things.
And people tend to pass you over ’cause you’re not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water
or stars in the sky.

But green’s the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like the ocean, or important like a mountain, or tall like a tree.

8 Reasons to Choose a Blank Canvas Wedding Venue

Haven Photography - French's Point Retreat House Blank Canvas Wedding Venue Coastal Maine

Wedding venues in Maine are numerous and varied in the settings, amenities, and offerings. There are seaside resorts, rustic mountain top lodges, simple lakeside summer camps, storied social halls, grand historic homes, traditional New England Barns and Farms. The range in formality of these options is VAST! In Maine, couples planning wedding nuptials have the benefit of a large and varied pool of options. That is one of the wonderful things about planning a Maine wedding…. There is a location for any couple that wishes to marry here in Maine!

Traditional Venues like resorts and inns offer their event locations by the day or by a number of hours and may host more than one event or wedding per day unless you buy out the lodging for the weekend. Typically, full service venues require you to use their food and beverage services with a minimum to meet for these services, choose specific vendors for event from their preferred vendor list and may require a room block requirement be met. Weddings at this style of venue tend to afford simple planning because events follow a fairly standard timeline and pace over a single day.

In contrast, Blank Canvas Venues like private homes, barns and camps tend to offer the complete location by the weekend from Thursday-Sunday. The end result of a wedding at a Blank Canvas wedding venue is anything but a cookie cutter celebration. Many of this style of venues have some onsite lodging but not all. Most of these venues offer a preferred vendor list, but you can choose your own vendors. These venues appeal to couples with an independent streak and a desire to craft their own celebration that allows them to share what they love most about Maine with their family and friends.

So how do you know if a blank canvas venue is right for you? There are many reasons why couples choose a blank canvas venue over a traditional venue for their wedding celebration. Each couple that makes this choice in venue style prizes these nine things above all others when they are planning their wedding weekend:

Cuppa Photography - French's Point Blank Canvas Wedding Venue on the Coast of Maine - Vacation Rental and Wedding Venue

Quality Time

With use from Thursday-Sunday, you will have more time to have a quality exchange with your guests that have traveled to join you and celebrate. By creating the opportunity to interact with your guests over several days instead of one 6-10 hour time block, you take pressure off yourself, you immediate family that may be hosting this event with you, and setting ales harried pace for yourself and your loved ones. It is likely that you will not have to run from table to table at the reception to be sure to thank each guest for coming on your wedding day should you choose to go Blank Canvas!

Privacy & Intimacy

A wedding at a blank canvas venue where your family, friends and your chosen vendors are the only ones about, really allows a very different level of privacy and intimacy than a resort venue. At a Blank Canvas Venue, you run no risk of bumping into another bride on your wedding day because her wedding is just a few doors away. You will not have random guests watching your wedding ceremony from their lounge chair at the pool in their bikini or speedo.

Emily Delameter Photography - Blank Canvas Wedding Venue in Maine - French's Point Retreat Ceremony and Reception

The Whole Place is Yours!

For that reason, you can typically choose where you host your various wedding weekend events with more freedom than that of a TV. Once you rent the venue, you have access to all the spaces offered at the venue in that given time, so location feels more like your home away from home!

Going With Your Own Flow

At a Blank Canvas Venue, there are likely some limits to the hours you can host your event, as is the case with any venue. But you can be certain, that at a BCV you can craft a timeline that suits your flow for the day with more freedom than a Traditional Venue. This allows you to spend the time on the things that matter to you most… You want an hour and a half for cocktail hour so you can partake in this after your wedding photos are complete, you can do it! You want 3 full hours on the dance floor to dance your heart out to your incredible band, you can do that too!

Emily Delameter Photography - Dancing at the Reception at French's Point Tented Estate

Define Your Own Traditions

Weather you go the traditional route, or wish to forge your own way, you have the choice to decide at a BCV. There is no expectation that you make any traditional moment, part of your wedding.

Unique Reflection of You

At a BCV, you can make the experience you offer your guests specific and meaningful to because each part of the weekend. Not a fan of the bouquet toss or dollar dance, skip them and spend more time chatting around the fire pit enjoying a hand crafted s’more or breaking out your best dance moves.

Budgetary Control

BCV offer the benefit of more control over the wedding budget. With no food or beverage minimum to meet, or 50+ lodging block to buy out as is often the case with a TV. At a BCV you choose the priority of where wish to invest your wedding budget based on your mutual vision. If you want a kick butt band, but are not prioritizing gourmet faire, you can invest your money in the band. If an open bar is a key element in your event, but you are not focused on an over the top floral design, invest in the bar. Obviously, planning a wedding and working within a budget is all about making choices. At a BCV, you have the opportunity to make more choices.

Draft Your Own Vendor Team

Maine is blessed with the asset of an incredibly talented, dedicated, abundant wedding vendor community. At a BCV, you can pick a vendor team that suits your priorities, vision and budget that will help you create your vision of the weekend.

A Blank Canvas Venue is going to offer you a very different outcome for your wedding as compared to a Traditional Venue. Almost always, BCV weddings offer hybrid experience with a bit of a wedding, a reunion and a vacation all mixed together, for more fun and more vivid memories for all.

Emily Delamater Photography - Pets in your Maine Wedding at French's Point on the Coast of Maine

You invite all of your nearest and dearest to celebrate your wedding festivities, have you considered including your four-legged pet friends as well?

We are pet-friendly at French’s Point and would love for you to bring them along to be a part of your Maine wedding! Dogs are always a welcomed addition to the big day, and many times they play an important role in the wedding party: carrying a sign or acting as an usher or ring bearer.

Things to Think About When Including Your Pets

  1. First of all, make sure your venue allows pets – French’s Point allows well-behaved pets that are current on their immunizations, are crated when left alone in our lodgings, and have a handler.
  2. Then consider how you want your pet to participate in your ceremony. Do you want him to have a central role? As in walking down the aisle as a flower-bearer? Or do you want her in the audience with other family?
  3. Once you’ve figured out what role you want your pet to play, you need to find someone to be in charge of him. This person will walk him where he needs to go, hold onto his leash during the ceremony, and, most importantly, take him elsewhere to discretely do his business if nature calls. Keep in mind that a guest who acts as your pet-wrangler won’t be able to really relax and enjoy your wedding, so consider hiring a pet sitter.

When deciding whether to include a pet, you and your partner should be honest about the risks. Dogs bark, cats can cower or hiss, pigs snort, and as I’ve already mentioned, any pet could make a mess at the worst, possible time.

Still, with a little planning and some practice, a well-behaved pet can make a memorable and adorable addition to the ceremony. And for plenty of pet-lovers, it’s not a question of whether or not to include your best friend in your wedding, it’s simply a matter of how best to make it happen!
