Farm House BBQ Lawn & West Overlook Terrace

Just behind the Farm House, overlooking the west slope and the Sandy Point State Park that wraps around the estate is a wonderful little BBQ Lawn and the West Overlook Terrace. These casual spaces are ideal for small groups to gather.

This spring we painted our five 12’ long x 44” wide picnic tables white. They can seat 12 guests each. This lawn is just outside the Farm House kitchen and parlor. It is equipped with a gas grille and tank and a propane boiler with a big pot for boiling corn, lobster, clams, mussels or crabs. We also have a small charcoal grille if that is your preference. We supply a tank of propane and you supply the charcoal and replacement tanks during your stay. Thursday night BBQ dinners are a popular event out here. As family and friends roll into town, you can host a casual dinner.  We suggest having events catered so that you don’t have to lift a finger and you can visit with your guests. Creative Catering is a local caterer that can provide fully prepared meals or simply provide the food (burgers, brats, hot dogs) ready to go on the grille, along with the prepared sides, salads and desserts. Guests have also had Uproot Pie Company come with their portable pizza oven parked at the bottom of the slope and serve pizza with farmers market-fresh ingredients. I love the owner Jessica and her pizza even more!

On the West Overlook Terrace, we added a high BTU propane fire pit. The smoke from the old wood-burning fire pit blown by the wind used to drive guests off the patio. This new fire pit solves this problem and is surrounded by rocking lounge chairs that overlook the Recreation Lawn, a garden pool, the organic garden and orchard and offers ocean views peeping through the 100+ acres of wooded walking trails in the Sandy Point State Park.

In late April, our family took in the first of the warm afternoon sunsets from the BBQ lawn with a delicious dinner at the picnic tables together, after a very long day of landscaping on our third pre-season work weekend to get the grounds ready for the families joining us this year. It felt so good to feel the sun on my skin and see the beautiful (albeit dirt-streaked) faces of my family around the table together. I hope your family enjoys this space as much as mine.

We will share the details of the other winter enhancement projects in upcoming posts. We hope you love them as much as we do.

FAQ: How Do I Reserve French’s Point?

When you determine French’s Point is the right choice of venue for your gathering, securing your weekend is quite simple:

  1. Request your reservation for your date via email or phone.
  2. A virtual contract will be emailed to you and your fiancé for your signature. Once the virtual contract is executed, your date will be held for 5 days until the reservation retainer is received by our office.
  3. Send your $10,000 reservation retainer, paid via check or by wire transfer.
  4. Please confirm with our office which payment method you have selected to pay the reservation retainer and when it has been sent or initiated.
  5. Once we confirm receipt of the reservation retainer and the dually executed reservation contract, our office will confirm that your reservation is official.

A Neighborhood Wedding Celebration

We are blessed… for so many reasons. One of the things that we cherish most about our work here at French’s Point is that our celebrations are all about family & milestone moments. Every wedding & gathering we host here is a gift; one we give and one we receive back twice again. We know that not everyone is so privileged with work that is so happy. Every once in awhile, we get to host a wedding that has a personal connection to us directly.

In June, we celebrated Marion & Alex, alongside their family and friends. Marion was part of the tribe of children who grew up here with me on Hersey Retreat Road. Her cottage was two doors down from my own. The path between our homes was well-beaten as our raggle-taggle crew roamed freely between homes all summer. Marion is the youngest of the four siblings in her family. Her sister and I played and competed in the Miss Sandy Point Competition, one younger brother was close to my younger brother and her other older brother and I was friends and sweethearts for a summer. Her parents were always kind enough to fold me into their activities at nearby Fort Knox, antique shopping, my first trip to Moody’s Diner & adventures aboard their sailboat. Her father is a doctor who mended a broken foot in junior high after a soccer injury. He is a history buff and brought that history to life with the best stories (somewhat rooted in truth and enhanced with fantasy). Her father and mine were childhood friends that grew up in the same cottages, just doors away. Her grandparents were members of the church that owned French’s Point before we bought it. I considered Marion’s grandparents the matriarch and patriarch of our little summer community. They are a very special family to me, and life-long summer neighbors. Marion might have been the smallest of the sea of cousins in the Bradford Cottage, but she was mighty and adored by all. My sweet father dubbed her “Maid Marion” and to this day, the name has endured for him.

After Alex proposed at the gazebo at French’s Point, they came to me. It seemed for them that celebrating here was the only option, given their connection to the place. They engaged an incredible team of vendors who brought their plans to life for the weekend. Marion in adulthood is an articulate, kind, patient, diplomatic, intelligent, and loving woman. It was such a gift to reconnect with her at this stage in our lives. Alex adores Marion and I am so happy to see the mutual respect and admiration between them. We got to be a part of the sweet, joyful, glorious weekend, and for that, my heart is full.
