MEET THE OWNER

Jessika's connection to French's Point began generations before her birth. Like her grandmother and her father before her, she was part of the community and spent her childhood summers in a family cottage at the edge of the estate. She witnessed with wonder how the magnetic magic of the Point brought people from all walks of life and all over the world together in connection. 

Years later, when the estate faced being sold and redeveloped into condominiums, Jessika returned with a clear intention to honor the estate's history, restore it to its former glory, and continue its legacy as a place where people gather in connection and celebration. 

With help from her experienced, exceptional team, her husband, and their four children, Jessika continues to build opportunities for visitors to enjoy. The French's Point of today is a result of that commitment: a coastal Maine destination wedding venue that remains centered on the simple belief that time spent in connection, among Maine's natural beauty, is worth protecting.

French's Point — A History

French's Point was first settled in 1768 by Col. Benjamin Shute, a decorated officer in the Revolutionary War and the Penobscot Expedition. As the French and Indian Colonial War brought near-constant threat of British invasion, Shute built an underground tunnel from the farmhouse to the shoreline as an escape route for his family in uncertain times. That tunnel later carried freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad, and later still, rumrunners evading the law during Prohibition.

Shute's early homestead grew into what is now the Farm at French's Point, today the oldest wooden building in Waldo County.

1890 – 1908

In 1890, the Universalist Church of Bangor acquired the shorefront estate and established the Hersey Retreat Lodge, hosting community gatherings, weddings, summer camps, and events for over a century. When fire destroyed the lodge in 1908, architect Wilfred E. Mansur rebuilt in its place the grand shingled Chateau-style that still stands today.

2002

In 2002, Jessika Brooks-Brewer, a descendant of the community that founded Hersey Retreat, purchased the estate and began methodically restoring it to its former glory. She continues to slowly acquire adjacent homes and land parcels that had been separated from the original land grant to expand the footprint of the estate.
