Vendor Spotlight: Churchill Events

Kate Crabtree Photography - Craig from Churchill Events - Maine Wedding Catering

Our mission is to provide the finest service, event planning, and creative cuisine available. ~Churchill Events

How long have you been operating your business?

23 years

What inspired your passion for catering?

No doubt I was inspired by my mother and two grandmothers…all of whom were excellent (and often inventive) cooks.  I was always underfoot in their kitchens, asking if I could help…and even if I could prepare the entire meal.  At the age of 11, I was asked by a university grad student, newly arrived from India, to help him and his wife learn to cook “American style” food.  I guess I was ‘hooked’ at that point.  In addition, I have always had a desire to create, to please clients, and to work with co-workers who are as compassionate about their work as I am.

What food items would you suggest to a client hosting a destination wedding in Maine?

Sustainable products from Maine (seasonal vegetables and fruits, lobsters, clams, oysters, salmon, haddock, scallops) wherever and whenever possible.

Do you cater rehearsal dinners and other various wedding weekend meals?

We can provide services for rehearsal dinners, sports events kickoff continental breakfasts, brunch, picnic lunches, lobster bakes, and welcome receptions…along with after parties.

Please describe your ideal client.

The ideal client: someone who can verbalize what they want in terms of the overall design theme and who can articulate what they like for food…then leave it all to us to propose the complete package for their final approval.

How would you describe your wedding fare and service style?

Our wedding fare is generally described by our clients as “the best wedding food we’ve ever had” and tied for first place with the service staff who are always polite, attentive, helpful, and don’t know how to say ‘no’.   Whatever (within reason and the regulations of French’s Point) they want we should be able to provide.

Vendor Spotlight: Cakes for All Seasons

How would you describe your products and service?

Cakes for All Seasons is a custom dessert studio creating cakes, sweets and other treats, from scratch, for weddings and other special occasions, using the finest ingredients. I love a challenge and am happy to create special recipes or family favorites for my clients.

Providing gracious, responsive service, I ensure that all of your questions are answered and your needs are met. Wedding cakes are delivered throughout southern and coastal Maine and New Hampshire.

My brand new commercial kitchen and showroom is located in the old Pepperell Mill in Biddeford.

How long have you been operating your business?

I’ve been baking for clients for the past 25 years but have focused on wedding cakes since 2013.

Can you accommodate food allergies?

I can accommodate most food allergies. I am not an allergen free kitchen, however.  This week I had a tasting with a bride who is allergic to eggs. She loved my vegan chocolate cake and is having white chocolate cream cheese frosting on her wedding cake, in place of my usual Italian meringue buttercream.

What’s the average cost per person for your product?

$6- $9 per person. Some are more, some are less, depending on flavors and decor.

Describe your range of design style.

Most of my cakes have a casual or classic feel, with soft buttercream and fresh flowers.  Naked cakes feature fresh fruits and greens. Fondant allows a range of design elements, including marbled finishes , ruffles, plaques with piped monograms, metallic accents and dramatic colors.

What is your absolute favorite dessert?

Nutella straight out of the jar, minimal clean-up and I don’t have to turn on an oven.

What is your favorite day trip in Maine?

Anything that gets me out on the water. I grew up on sailboats so delivering cakes to islands or coastal venues is a lot of fun for me.  Riding the Casco Bay Ferry Lines along its summer route is a big treat.

Vendor Spotlight: Blush Bridal & Formal

Blush Bridal and Formal - Maine Wedding Dress Store - Bridal Gowns - Maine Wedding Vendor Spotlight

Blush is New England’s only independently [female] owned multi-location bridal & formal wear store. With convenient locations in Portland, Bangor, and Presque Isle, we provide a luxury experience at affordable price points. Each store is stocked with beautiful styles for weddings, proms, pageants, and everyday casual dresses. We believe in the power of the right dress and it is our goal and privilege to empower women to feel their best daily. ~Blush Bridal & Formal

How long have you been operating your business?

7.5 years

What inspired your passion for bridal fashion?

My biggest passion has always been for business. Since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to operate my own business. I grew up going to leadership camps and reading personal development books. As I got older, I developed a passion for fashion and interior design and loved getting to experiment with both as an adult. When the opportunity came to purchase my first bridal shop, it seemed like the perfect fit for all of the things I was passionate about.

How many locations do you have and how do they differ?

We have 3 locations- Portland, Bangor, and Presque Isle. We carry everything from casual dresses to prom, bridesmaids, and wedding gowns in all locations. However, the selection does vary based on price point and trends that are successful in each area. In addition, we recently added an online casual clothing boutique.

How would you describe your style and services?

As a brand, Blush is about so much more than selling a dress. Our mission is to use the experience of dress shopping to serve, celebrate, and empower women. As a woman owned business, we’re extremely passionate about delivering an experience of excellence that will become a treasured memory for the women who trust us in their search for the perfect dress. We combine the flexibility of being a small business with the organization and structure of being a multi-location corporation to provide our guests with a unique atmosphere that is consistent, safe, inspiring, and feels like home.

Please provide us with a sample of different gowns at different price points.

We carry gowns starting around $1,000 and up to $5,000, depending on location. We also carry a selection of sample sale gowns that can be found at even lower price points. We can work with very conservative budgets as well as create customized couture gowns. We’re also very proud to carry a curated collection of wedding dresses exclusive to Blush, Ana Sophia. These gowns aren’t pictured anywhere online except our website & offer brides gorgeous styles that they won’t see all over Pinterest.

When making an appointment to try on bridal gowns, how many guests do you recommend they bring along with them?

We recommend bringing only a few of the people closest to you for your bridal appointment. This helps ensure a calming, quality experience for the bride. We can definitely accommodate larger parties, but don’t find that the best experience for most brides.

Are there any items they need to bring with them? Should they have a specific style in mind?

The most important things to bring to a bridal appointment are an open mind and a positive attitude. While basic undergarments are important, being in the right mindset for such a key life moment is our number one tip. Finding the perfect dress can be like finding the perfect partner- you never know when it’s going to happen! Being ready for that magic to happen is SO important.

How early in advance should our clients book an appointment with you and when do they need to purchase their wedding gown?

The best time to purchase a special order wedding dress is 9-12 months prior to the event. Although we can most definitely work with shorter timelines, allowing ample time for the dress to be created, shipped, and altered is important to minimize stress. Scheduling an appointment with Blush a few weeks in advance will help ensure better availability, especially if one is looking for a Sunday appointment.

Once customer’s purchase their wedding gown, what are the next steps?

Once a gown is ordered, it’s a good idea to contact a seamstress right away (we can provide a list of options) & schedule a fitting for after the dress is scheduled to arrive. Then, it’s time to start shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses and accessories.

Do you also offer bridesmaids dresses? If so, what designers do you have available and what is the price range?

We do! We carry a variety of different designers in each store (shown on our website). On average, they range from $150-350.

Food Trucks at French’s Point

Food Trucks at French's Point - Maine Wedding Venue - Maine Food Truck - Fishin Ships - Rachel Buckley Wedding Photography

Couples are always looking for ways to make their wedding weekend experience fun, memorable and unique. Because weddings are so trend influenced, the food truck movement has made it’s way into the wedding weekend at French’s Point too. We often get the question “Can we use a food truck for our wedding weekend at French’s Point”. Our answer is, sure you can.  But here are some things to consider first:

Food Truck Logistics

First, food trucks are not caterers in most instances. They do not handle setup or breakdown during events, they do not buss tables, clean up waste, manage rentals, or communicate with the rest of the event team like a caterer would. Therefore, the responsibility of these tasks will then fall to your planner. For this reason, a food truck should certainly be discussed with your planner first before they are hired.

How Many Food Trucks Do I Need?

Secondly, food trucks can put out a large volume of food in a short period of time, but not in the volume needed in the time allowed at a wedding celebration. In our experience, we feel you will need one truck for every fifty guests you are serving, in order to put out the correct volume of food in less than one hour of service time. If you have 150 guests to serve, then three food trucks should be hired. Each food truck is different and some have more wedding event experience than others, so you should discuss this and your timing expectations with the food truck directly.

Our Stand-out Food Truck Providers

Third, not all food trucks have experience in providing service for wedding weekend events, or have experience here at French’s Point. Here is our list of stand-out food truck providers:

Urban Sugar

  • Donuts!
  • Great for Breakfast catering or afternoon snacks

Uproot Pie Co.

  • Wood Fired Pizza & Farm Fresh Salad
  • Lunch or Dinner

Saltbox Cafe

  • Gourmet Breakfast Sandwiches & Wraps, and lots of other options for Lunch & Dinner
  • Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner

Fishin Ships

  • Delicious Fish & Chips, Fish Sandwiches & Fries
  • Lunch or Dinner

Food Truck Locations at French’s Point

Fourth, when you decide to work with a food truck, you need to consider which location at French’s Point you wish to utilize and your poor weather plan for your events:

The Farm House Private Beach

The Farm House West Slope Lawn(next to the Farm House Gazebo)

The Retreat House Portico (direct access to the Main Entrance)

The Retreat House West Side Porch (direct access to the Lounge)

The Retreat House East Side Porch (direct access to the Dining Room)

The Retreat House Sail Cloth Tent

When Should I Have a Food Truck During My Wedding Weekend?

Lastly, food trucks are a great accent to the celebration, but we have found that it is best if they are not the primary caterer for your wedding day.  Here are some examples of where and when a food trucks has created a successful & memorable moment at French’s Point:

  • Urban Sugar Donut Truck & Espresso Dave’s parked out near the Retreat House West Side Porch on Saturday morning
  • Uproot Pie Co parked near the gazebo at the Farm House West slope Lawn serving up their delicious pizza for a casual Thursday night welcome dinner after a rousing afternoon of games on the neighboring Farm House Recreation Lawn.
  • Saltbox Café parked out near the Retreat House Portico serving up their amazing breakfast sandwiches & burritos for a Sunday morning farewell Brunch.
  • Fishin Ships parked down near the Retreat House Sail Cloth Tent for an casual rehearsal dinner on Friday night.

We hope that these details are helpful when you are considering a food truck as part of your wedding festivities.

“At Bar Harbor Catering Company, we’re foodies with an extreme case of wanderlust. Our mission is to produce extraordinary events with legendary customer service and modern Maine cuisine, created by happy people.” – Bar Harbor Catering Company

How long have you been operating your business?

2009 – we’re celebrating our 10 year anniversary this year!

How would you describe your services?

BHCC has grown into a full-service catering and event planning company focusing on the client and their overall experience, not only on the event day but in the months and even years leading up to an event. BHCC’s team spends time getting to know each client and then creates unique experiences based on their dreams and expectations. In the kitchen, our commitment to quality ingredients is essential. We utilize local organic produce whenever possible and source sustainable ingredients from local farms.

What makes your work unique?

We live by the saying “good enough is not enough.” This reaches beyond the dining experience at events. From the initial planning process and venue site visits to how we train and develop each of our team members to event design and creation, we never settle for mediocrity.

  • Woman-owned and run
  • Specialize in one-on-one style service
  • Offer additional substantial benefits to booking our services
  • Community involvement
  • Locally sourced ingredients, work with farms to bring farm to table style offerings
  • Compost and recycling program, Sustainable Business Pledge
  • Different is the new normal
  • Gaining popularity, our private event chefs serve restaurant quality food in small, unique settings

How would you describe your style?

We pride ourselves on forging our own path, taking cues from the old, new, textured, traditional, nontraditional, unconventional, and everything in between. We also look to where we live for A LOT of our style inspiration. Extra touches, which are above and beyond the expected, make each event even more special and unique. We go where each client’s event goes – be that at a campground, an estate perched on a cliff, a rustic farmhouse, or anywhere in between.

For anyone planning a wedding or major event, one of the most alluring qualities of this place is the beautiful backdrops. The evergreen forests hugging the cragged shores, the fields full of lupines that, at night, dance beneath one of the darkest night skies you’ll ever see, and the way the sea, lakes, rivers, streams, mountains, and wide open spaces all come together in one place. It’s simply magical. The natural, authentic rugged elegance of Maine is one of BHCC’s specialties.

We also do a lot of travel worldwide to keep the seasons of our craft fresh and growing!

How would you describe your ideal client?

Any client is our ideal client. As cheesy as that sounds, we love working with clients, no matter whether they have any ideas about their event or none at all – getting to know them is one of our favorite parts of the planning process! Although, a love of food is a must! If great food (and service) isn’t a priority for a particular couple, we likely won’t be a good fit for their event.

What is your favorite moment on the wedding day?

I’m a total sucker for when the couple sees one another for the first time. The raw emotional beauty of that unveiling is so wondrous. My second favorite, which is a close second, is that moment when the couple looks around in awe and just basks in the love of having their family and friends gathered in one place to celebrate their marriage. Because, there’s always that moment – when they’re sitting down to listen to toasts or when they’ve finished eating a bite to eat and they look around at everyone gathered…I always feel truly honored to witness that moment.

What is your favorite day trip in Maine?

One of my go-to ways to relax is to head into the woods for a long walk or hike. Living so close to Acadia National Park, this is certainly easy enough to do, but I love to escape to a more remote location. Moosehead Lake has been a very special spot for me for nearly 25 years. Whether I’m exploring the woods, kayaking on the lake, or laying on the beach staring up at the stars, it’s where I always feel the most at peace.

Real Review: The Venue Is Out Of A Dream

French's Point - Coastal Maine Destination Wedding Venue - Review - patrick_mcnamara_photo

Julianna & Cody

October 6th, 2018

There will never be enough words to describe how happy and satisfied we were with French’s Point (and Jessika & Nicole)! We found French’s Point in a magazine and just knew we had to set up a tour. From the second we walked into the venue we fell in love with it and couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. Jessika and Nicole were incredible to work with, they always made time to answer our questions, give us suggestions, and help turn our dream wedding into a reality. Nicole was our wedding coordinator and we cherished and valued the relationship – Nicole was attentive, polite, professional, accommodating, timely, and understanding.

We had both our rehearsal dinner and wedding at French’s Point. The venue is out of a dream – an exquisite estate right on the water. Our guests stayed at Beach Rose Farm House for the weekend, which was equally as beautiful. Our extended family members stayed at other houses located on or near the property, which was very convenient as everything was in walking distance once our guests arrived.

Our wedding day is one we want to relive over and over again, in large part because of the location. We are so happy we chose French’s Point – beautiful, timeless and classy. It is unlike any other wedding venue. Every guest was blown away by the sheer and unique beauty and we continue to receive compliments daily!

2 Different Styles of Wedding Photography

Styles of Photography: Greta Tucker Photography - Coastal Maine Wedding Photographer Professional
As a newly engaged couple, you have many vendors to book for your wedding day and one of the key professionals is the photographer. This might be the first time you’ve ever hired a professional photographer and not sure where to being your search.
Before you begin the search for the photographer that is perfect for you, you need to know that there are few distinct types of photography: photojournalism, fine art, editorial, traditional… I will talk about two defined styles that are very popular and that primarily describe my own photography style:

Fine Art

Focused on creating works of art with each shot, and usually refers to film photography. It’s all about creating visual art, that is authentic, simple and beautiful.
This type of photography requires the photographer to be more deliberate with each shot, in order to create those heirloom portraits that will appreciate in value with each passing year. This is the style of photography that I love when it comes to bride + groom portraits and the details of a wedding.

Photojournalistic/Documentary

This style is generally characterized by an unposed and organic way of documenting the day as it unfolds. If you hire a photographer, who specializes in the photojournalistic style of wedding photography, you are most likely get the most beautiful, emotional photos. Most of the time your photographer will be ‘invisible” so they can allow the beautiful moments happen organically and capture them as they happen. For assistant photographers, I always choose to work with those, who are great at documenting these type of photos, while I am photographing the bride + groom, bridal party, and family portraits.  They love receiving these images that helots preserve the most precious memories.
Warmly,
Greta
