Emily Carter is a very talented floral designer I met years ago when I first began in the wedding industry here in Maine. I was a fledging wedding venue owner then and she was working for Minott’s Flowers. I just adored talking with Emily and the then-owner of Minott’s. They were so kind and welcoming and their designs were always beautiful, vibrant and unique.

Over a decade after she began working in the floral industry in the Berkshire’s of Massachusetts and then in Charleston, South Carolina, Emily and her husband moved to Maine to put down roots. She started Emily Carter Floral Designs so she could continue to work in the industry she loved and share her talents with couples choosing to marry in Maine. Emily is inspired by art, the elements, the setting for which she is designing, and her clients. She strives to provide a:

“Cohesive representation of them and their day that encompasses the season and surroundings that they are getting married in.”

Meet my friend, Emily Carter.

How long have you been operating your business?

Eight years operating my own business, 20 years as a floral designer.

How would you describe your style?

As an artist at heart, I do not feel that one style defines my designs. Also after being in the industry for 20 years, I feel like I have had a wide range of exposure to various trends and styles which strengthens my ability to ensure that a floral design is most fitting and cohesive for my clients, rather than just with the existing trends. I tend to love lush full blooms and vines of just about any kind, but they can be designed in a multitude of beautiful ways from contemporary, clean, contour designs to lush, romantic, garden styles.

How would you describe the range of your services? For example, florist, event design, etc.

Emily Carter Floral Designs (ECFD) is a floral design service studio. We do have rentals; however they all pertain to the floral aspect of a wedding. We do offer design recommendations and feedback as apart of our services at ECFD to all of our clients, as I feel that this is a necessity to ensure a cohesive design for your event. Working closely with other vendors in the industry also enables us to partner with some of the greatest vendors in lighting, linens, tents and event planning as well, and we are always happy to refer our clients to some of the best vendors in New England if they need referrals. We stick to making your florals look stunning!

What inspires you?

The seasons of New England are enough to inspire me. Maybe it is due to the fact that I am from the South that I am so enamored with them, but the seasons in Maine are so wonderful as they are each so distinct in their own way. From being inspired by the ice dripping off the trees in Winter, to the new buds of Spring, the wondrous beauty of Summer in Maine and the coast, to the Mountains and the beauty the trees give us as they change in the Fall… I am inspired by it all.

As a client, how many months out should I meet with you to discuss my vision?

A year in advance is great to start the design consulting. This ensures that I can work with my clients closely during the planning of their entire event and it also ensures better availability from my company as we do book out every season.

What information do I need to know about my wedding before I meet with you?

You do not need to be far along at all in the planning of your wedding. I am happy to brainstorm design concepts based on directions that you are leaning in and even attire selections that you are liking. Knowing an overall floral budget range is the most helpful piece of information to bring to the table when starting to chat, as it enables me to make the most appropriate recommendations within the design plan.

What do you love most about Maine weddings?

Seasons all the way!
