Vendor Spotlight: Cakes for All Seasons

How would you describe your products and service?

Cakes for All Seasons is a custom dessert studio creating cakes, sweets and other treats, from scratch, for weddings and other special occasions, using the finest ingredients. I love a challenge and am happy to create special recipes or family favorites for my clients.

Providing gracious, responsive service, I ensure that all of your questions are answered and your needs are met. Wedding cakes are delivered throughout southern and coastal Maine and New Hampshire.

My brand new commercial kitchen and showroom is located in the old Pepperell Mill in Biddeford.

How long have you been operating your business?

I’ve been baking for clients for the past 25 years but have focused on wedding cakes since 2013.

Can you accommodate food allergies?

I can accommodate most food allergies. I am not an allergen-free kitchen, however. This week I had a tasting with a bride who is allergic to eggs. She loved my vegan chocolate cake and is having white chocolate cream cheese frosting on her wedding cake, in place of my usual Italian meringue buttercream.

What’s the average cost per person for your product?

$6- $9 per person. Some are more, some are less, depending on flavors and decor.

Describe your range of design style.

Most of my cakes have a casual or classic feel, with soft buttercream and fresh flowers. Naked cakes feature fresh fruits and greens. Fondant allows a range of design elements, including marbled finishes, ruffles, plaques with piped monograms, metallic accents and dramatic colors.

What is your absolute favorite dessert?

Nutella straight out of the jar, minimal clean-up and I don’t have to turn on an oven.

What is your favorite day trip in Maine?

Anything that gets me out on the water. I grew up on sailboats so delivering cakes to islands or coastal venues is a lot of fun for me. Riding the Casco Bay Ferry Lines along its summer route is a big treat.

Vendor Spotlight: From This Day Forward

How long have you been operating your business?

I started “From This Day Forward” salon in 1999 to focus on brides looking for on-site makeup services. A salon in Boothbay Harbor had heard about me and asked if I was willing to help with bridal makeup because they didn’t offer that service. I was a makeup artist trainer prior to that for a private label cosmetic company and was ready to take on a new challenge. From there, it was all word-of-mouth around the state and I’ve never had to pay for advertising.

How would you describe your services?

I specialize in the soft, natural look today’s bride is looking for but can get as dramatic as one wants.I offer airbrush or liquid minerals and each client receives a complimentary fresh tube of lipstick to freshen up with during the day and also human hair lashes for those who want them. Some of my clients refer to my demeanor as “laid back, easy to work with and without drama”. I take that as a compliment!

How long does it take per client on their wedding day to do their makeup?

I like to plan on 30 minutes per person, although not everyone takes that long. I also allow a little extra time for those who decide at the last minute that they want theirs done as well.

Would you recommend always doing a trial run before the wedding day for the client? How much does a trial cost?

It’s not necessary for me to do a trial, but it is much more vital to brides, especially those who have had bad experiences having their makeup done professionally in the past—or those who have skin allergies or don’t usually wear makeup. It helps them check one more thing off on their list of concerns before the wedding. Trials are included in the bridal fee.

What would be your most sage advice for a client having an outdoor wedding in Maine?

I offer them advice pertaining to the season they have chosen. Maine is a gorgeous place to get married at any time of the year, but I find some of my destination brides need to plan on the things that they may not be familiar within their own area. Things like fog, mosquitoes, icy conditions, or even heavy rainstorms. I think that is one of the things I admire most about the wedding planners at Frenchs Point, they always have the bride’s back on the unexpected and they take on the stress rather than the bride.

Do you like to see pictures of the client’s attire before the makeup trial? Is it okay for clients to send you photos of makeup styles they like?

One of the things I really enjoy is seeing their dress and accessories. I have always been into fashion and seeing the style they’ve chosen gives me a vision of the look that would be perfect for their big day. Many of my brides have themes such as Gatsby, 1960’s, Old Hollywood, etc. Some haven’t been able to put a name on the look and together we come up with themes like “Romantic”, “Magical”, “Boho”, etc. The artist in me really comes alive when we agree on a look.

Some brides are logistically unable to have a trial before the wedding, so we stay in touch through email and I put all the photos she sends me in a folder to bring along that day. I’ve also had last-minute wedding requests where the bride really hasn’t been able to describe the look she has in mind, but within 10 minutes we’ve figured it out together.

Do you enjoy working on location?

I love working on location! It is a real pleasure to be part of the excitement. By the time I pack up to leave I feel like I’ve been part of their “tribe” and anticipate the photos that I will be able to share on my website. So many times I’ve seen the bride again when she has recommended me to one of her friends. I love that!

What is your favorite day trip in Maine?

I think my favorite is when I travel to an island by ferry. It really brings out the “Maine” spirit that needs to be part of the wedding flair. It’s always a great feeling being asked to perform one of the most important services of their wedding day, regardless of where they may be.

Wedding Day Woes – 5 Things That Take More Time Than You Think

Our dear friend, Maria Northcott, the owner of A Sweet Start, travels the State of Maine as the most wonderful wedding officiate. She provides her couples with meaningful, customized, worry-free wedding ceremonies, that are full of love! We adore collaborating with Maria. She is a pro with a huge heart for her clients and the team of wedding vendors that bring their celebrations to life, and it really shows.

Maria and I recently created a list of 5 Things That Take More Time Than You Think On Your Wedding Day. Ask your wedding planner to include these surprisingly time-consuming elements in your wedding day timeline to ensure the festivities flow with ease. Allowing time for them in your day and avoiding the surprise is essential to make sure the day runs smoothly.

Allow me to introduce my sweet and talented friend, Greta Tucker.

How long have you been operating your business?

I have been photographing weddings for the past 5 years.

How would you describe your style?

I am a fine art wedding photographer and above all it is about making beautiful, vibrant images, that are timeless and elegant.

What lead you to be a wedding photographer?

Having lived in different countries gave me an in-depth understanding and appreciation for culture, traditions, family values. Of all traditions, I believe that marriage is one of the most important milestones in a person’s life and being able to document this day is a dream come true for me.

What is your favorite moment to photograph on the wedding day?

I adore photographing the ceremony and particularly the moment the groom sees his bride (even if they chose to have the first look before the ceremony).

Do you have a favorite spot at French’s Point to photograph couples?

One of my absolute favorites is the location directly behind the gazebo, you have the most breathtaking view.

Do you suggest having a second shooter at a French’s Point wedding?

This is one of the must-haves in wedding photography, especially if you are inviting over 100 guests.

How many hours of coverage do you suggest for a French’s Point wedding?

Number of hours always depends on the needs of the couple and ideally I recommend that coverage begins no later than 60 minutes before the bride gets dressed and 60 minutes into the dance party.

What is your favorite day trip in Maine?

One of my new favorites is Otter Cliff in Acadia National Park. We love exploring and finding new stunning locations with my family and always end up using these locations for engagement photoshoots with my couples.

Vendor Spotlight: Gus and Ruby Letterpress

French’s Point Estate is thrilled to continue our series of blog posts spotlighting amazing Maine wedding vendors that help to make weddings at our waterfront wedding venue not only successful but truly the embodiment of the experience our clients strive to craft for their family and friends. This series will showcase some of the best providers from our vibrant, talented, dedicated wedding industry community we are so proud to be a part of here in Maine and New England. Because of these wonderful people, the celebrations here are French’s Point Estate is the stuff of which dreams are made!

Choosing the ladies at Gus and Ruby Letterpress to design your custom wedding stationery is going to be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made. Not only are they both wonderfully creative, but they’re also fun, smart, and have years of experience. I love that their passion is bringing your ideas into reality. This is how they describe their vision:

“We believe every part of planning a wedding should be a joyous, celebratory experience. we are experts at offering advice regarding timing, explanations of the necessary pieces, tips on etiquette, and creative inspiration used to craft truly personal packages. From the story of a first kiss to the lyrics from a favorite song, we find inspiration in every personal detail and help couples create stationery as special as they are.”

Now, doesn’t that sound like a team you want to work with? Meet the creative duo behind Gus and Ruby Letterpress.

How long have you been operating your business?

We have been open as a custom design studio since 2008. What once began as a small side-business has grown into a full-time design and print shop as well as brick and mortar stationery and home-goods store.

How would you describe our products and services?

We offer a variety of services from true custom design – meaning we start from scratch to create a stationery suite just for you – to modified custom design based on our work or specific input, to customizable designs from albums of work from the country’s top designers.

Describe your range of design style.

We specialize in true custom design, so our style is really more a reflection of our couples’ styles! We pride ourselves on taking a couple’s love story and personal aesthetic and translating it into the perfect paper suite. We have designed suites that have ranged from super crisp and contemporary to lush and romantic florals to clean and bright nautical and everything in between. Our only goal as designers is to take your vision and translate it into something spectacular so the final product is a reflection of YOU and your style.

What makes your work unique?

Our story – with Whitney being a 3rd generation letterpress printing and us starting out printing on a press from the late 1800s that was owned by her grandfather – makes us unique. Ink and paper are part of our heritage and we are so proud to keep alive a printing technique from our forefathers. We strive to create pieces that truly tell the stories of our treasured clients – each suite is unique in that it is born from a love story and our deep-seated desire to create something stunning for each client.

What is your average cost per suite?

Because each of our clients’ needs and packages are so different and are quoted on a case-by-case basis, it’s very hard to provide an average cost. From our custom design and letterpress and foil stamp printing to digitally printed or thermography options from albums, we do offer a wide variety of options and price points.

Do you recommend hand-addressing invitations? If so, can you provide this service?

We absolutely recommend hand-addressing invitations! It’s such a lovely, personal touch for your guests. We don’t offer calligraphy in-house but do work with a team of incredible calligraphers for our clients’ projects.

What sage advice would you offer our couples?

Our first piece of advice is to trust your vendors! You are working with one of the best of the best teams in New England (French’s Point!) and they’ve likely introduced you to a slew of other talented professionals. Share your vision with your team and then trust them to do their jobs beautifully and execute on your behalf. You’ll be so much happier not feeling like you need to micromanage everything and you’ll be in such great hands with people who only want the very best for you and your big day. You hired them for a reason so sit back and enjoy the process!

The second piece of advice – more stationery related – that we offer is to give yourself plenty of time. The design process is always much smoother and more enjoyable when you (and we!) don’t feel rushed. As soon as you’ve made your big decisions (date, overall tone/vibe), contact us right away so we can begin brainstorming creative ideas for your paper pieces.

What’s your favorite day trip in Maine?

Such a tough question to pick just one trip! We really love heading up to Portland for a day of good eating and shopping! We’d start our morning with Holy Donuts and iced coffees from Bard then we’d head on a quick ferry ride out to Peaks Island for a morning of exploring. Once back on the mainland, we’d lunch on paninis and french fries at Duckfat or lobster rolls from Eventide Oyster Co. Cones in hand from Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream, we’d then spend the afternoon wandering around the old port and visiting all our favorite stores for inspiration and some retail therapy. If we’re feeling adventurous (and to build up an appetite again!), we may rent bikes and coast along the coast for the late afternoon. Cocktails at the Hunt and Alpine Club followed by dinner at one of the myriad amazing restaurants (Fore Street and Central Provisions being two of our classic favorites!) would really round out a dreamy day.

Vendor Spotlight: El’s Cards

French’s Point Estate is thrilled to continue our series of blog posts spotlighting amazing Maine wedding vendors that help to make weddings at our waterfront wedding venue not only successful but truly the embodiment of the experience our clients strive to craft for their family and friends. This series will showcase some of the best providers from our vibrant, talented, dedicated wedding industry community we are so proud to be a part of here in Maine and New England. This group of professional wedding vendors understands and adheres to our guiding principles for the service we endeavor to provide our clients: Be Responsive, Be Kind, Provide Excellent Customer Service, Provide the Very Best Product/Service. Because of these wonderful people, the celebrations here are French’s Point Estate is the stuff of which dreams are made!

I met El from El’s Cards very recently in person, but we have had clients in common for a few years now. Upon meeting her, I immediately knew why our couples adore her. Her work is exceptional, and she is a sweet, kind soul.

El is an artist and calligrapher. She is inspired by color and the beauty of nature, as you can clearly see in her work. Her signature watercolor regional maps are unique to her in style and loved by couples seeking destination weddings in New England. These beautiful, custom maps are often the first clue to the adventure ahead for guests attending a destination wedding in Maine, and they really set a beautiful tone. El even has her own font that mimics her personal calligraphy style: ElScript. She also has a full line of greeting cards, gift tags, and specialty invitations that can be both customized or semi-customized. If you need wedding stationery, talk to my friend El.

How long have you been operating your business?

We have been operating since 1999-so 17 years. I started in Boston and then met my husband and moved to New Hampshire in 2004. We have been growing ever since. Bob came on board here full time in April of 2015 and we are now a wife and husband team!

How would you describe your products and services?

El’s Cards is an original watercolor and calligraphy design company. We create wedding invitations, save the dates, and all the “day of” wedding paper goods one could need. We also offer hand calligraphy on guest envelopes, and a complimentary assembly and mailing service when people order invitations and calligraphy from us. We have a few special signature items. We will create custom maps as part of the invitation suite….very popular! Our couples love to use this as an insert in the invitation, or as a unique envelope liner. We also often offer artwork on the envelope. Receiving an envelope with artwork and calligraphy feels like getting a gift in the mail! But my very favorite custom item is the hand-painted seating chart with calligraphy. These are a true memento for the couple to enjoy for their lifetime together. These are totally unique. Each one is created especially for the couple and tailored to exactly what they would like. It’s beautiful…and practical! All the seating assignments for the wedding are first written by hand in calligraphy, then it is painted for the lucky couple to keep forever.

Describe your range of design style.

The invitation designs are a wide range…from very simple to completely custom. We have beautiful invitations with a single shell, flower, anchor, lobster, and so many more! We also will design something original and unique from start to finish with many of our couples. There are many options in between. We even recently created a special French’s Point invitation suite called Bay View! We have a wide range of choices and love to customize our existing designs.

What makes your work unique?

I create all of the artwork by hand and also create all the calligraphy fonts that we offer on our invitation suites. The fonts we use are exclusive to our invitations alone because they come from my own calligraphy styles! All of our designs are originally painted in watercolor and then printed in house on the highest quality cotton papers. We offer a truly unique experience, in that all of our invitations are customized in varying degrees. None of our watercolor designs are available anywhere else and everything is original to El’s Cards.

What is the average cost per suite?

$11 per suite-including what is listed below.
Our mid-range existing suites for 100 invitations cost $485 (invitation/envelope, reply/envelope) and our couples often add on an enclosure card ($1.50 each additional), hand calligraphy addressing service ($3 each additional), and often one of our unique envelope liners ($1.75 additional each). To add a custom map, the cost for those start at $495 for invitation clients.

Do you recommend hand addressing invitations? If so, can you provide this service?

I absolutely do! This is a super impactful way to show your guests that they are important to you. The extra time it takes (in this age of everything computer generated) will definitely make your wedding guests feel special. And yes…we do offer this service! Wedding envelope addressing is a wonderful way to make your invitation stand out! There is nothing like receiving a beautiful handwritten envelope with calligraphy in the mail.

What sage advice would you offer our couples?

When selecting your invitation, remember that it is the first glimpse that your guests will have of your wedding. It should be special, and most importantly, it should be truly an expression of you. Look for high-quality papers, and a design that will reflect the tone you want to set for the day. If you are having something custom-designed, be sure to allow enough time in case there is any back and forth with your designer. Communication with your designer is key! Ask questions and be clear about what you have in mind.

What’s your favorite day trip in Maine?

We love coming up the coast for drives and finding some place to have lunch. We will head up early, and enjoy driving without a plan…but always cruise near the shore. We’ll stop for a coffee or ice cream here or there. Last time we got a dozen fresh eggs from an unattended stand on the side of the road near Tenants Harbor! It’s always an adventure! Sometimes it’s more than a day…we often stay over somewhere!
