Real Review: The Venue Is Out Of A Dream

French's Point - Coastal Maine Destination Wedding Venue - Review - patrick_mcnamara_photo

Julianna & Cody

October 6th, 2018

There will never be enough words to describe how happy and satisfied we were with French’s Point (and Jessika & Nicole)! We found French’s Point in a magazine and just knew we had to set up a tour. From the second we walked into the venue we fell in love with it and couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. Jessika and Nicole were incredible to work with, they always made time to answer our questions, give us suggestions, and help turn our dream wedding into a reality. Nicole was our wedding coordinator and we cherished and valued the relationship – Nicole was attentive, polite, professional, accommodating, timely, and understanding.

We had both our rehearsal dinner and wedding at French’s Point. The venue is out of a dream – an exquisite estate right on the water. Our guests stayed at Beach Rose Farm House for the weekend, which was equally as beautiful. Our extended family members stayed at other houses located on or near the property, which was very convenient as everything was in walking distance once our guests arrived.

Our wedding day is one we want to relive over and over again, in large part because of the location. We are so happy we chose French’s Point – beautiful, timeless and classy. It is unlike any other wedding venue. Every guest was blown away by the sheer and unique beauty and we continue to receive compliments daily!

Sample Winter Wedding Weekend Itinerary

Planning a Winter Wedding in Maine - French's Point - Destination Winter Wedding Venue

At French’s Point, no matter the season, each wedding hosted here is a reflection of our couples and their vision for the experience they wish to share with their family and friends. We LOVE these weddings! But we love nothing more than a winter weekend wedding at French’s Point. It brings back memories of my own winter wedding 10 years ago. Winter weddings possess a magic and beauty all their own, simply not found in any other season. Perhaps I am biased. I do think that French’s Point was made for weddings, particularly this time of year. If you are considering a winter wedding, I thought I would share a sample winter wedding weekend itinerary with you for inspiration. Put your own touches on this and make the weekend your own!

Virtual Tour of The Retreat House at French’s Point

As we do almost every year, this past winter season was spent completing a number of major maintenance and repair projects to keep our beautiful buildings and grounds in top working order. We completed major renovations to the bedroom suites on the second and third floors of the Retreat House, and refurbished the main and lower levels as well. Explore these new renovations in our new virtual tour of the Retreat House in the below video. We especially want to thank of trusted friend, Josh Swan of Media Northeast for creating this gorgeous video, that captures the essence of French’s Point.

Welcome Centers

Welcoming Your Guests:

To aid in making the arrival process for your family as simple as possible and remove your need to check them in individually, we created Welcome Centers in the heart of each home. When you reserve French’s Point for your stay, as the host, you assign the bedrooms that your family and friends occupy. This will make the arrival process simple and offer the maximum comfort and enjoyment of the property by each guest.

As you enter the Retreat House & Farm House for your weekend getaway, you will see entryway tables, a framed floor map of the grounds, a copy of your customized room assignments, floor plans, and a bulletin board that is perfect for your sharing details of the weekend ahead with your guests and the weekend itinerary. You should include your chosen event planners contact information so guests can contact them with questions and ensure they have everything they need to be comfortable and you can then enjoy your time with your guests.

How to Assign Rooms:

You will receive a room assignment template and here are links to the floor plans on the website for both the Retreat House and Farm House. Here are the links to the virtual tour of the Farm House and the virtual tour of the Retreat House is coming this summer. The videos will be shared here and on the Retreat House page of the website as soon as it is complete.

We will share the details of the other Retreat House enhancements in upcoming posts. We hope you love them as much as we do.

Featured Textile Partner: Molly Hutchins of On Board Fabrics

There is nothing more important to me than family. But right after family, comes the priority of partnering with and supporting small, family-owned businesses in Maine that help us ensure our guests enjoy the best of what the state has to offer. When we renovated the Retreat House this past winter, we teamed up with some of my favorite Maine makers. I wanted to share these special people with you, because without them, the Retreat House project would not have been successful.

Did you know that both homes at French’s Point offer custom bed linens & textiles, proudly made in Maine?

In 2014, when we updated bedroom suites located inside the Farm House, we partnered with our friend Molly Hutchins of On Board Fabrics to make the perfect duvet covers, pillow shams and decorative pillow shams for our beds. There are 14 beds in the Farm House, so this was a fairly sizable undertaking, even in the off season. I got to know Molly thought that process and I can tell you with complete honesty, she is a pro. She can troubleshoot, problem solve and calculate so fast, that my poor little layman’s mind simply can’t keep up. We loved the bedding so much that when it came time to update the rooms in the Retreat House, I went straight to Molly (in the off season of course).

Molly made two sets of pillow shams for the eight guest rooms. She made decorative pillows too. Molly made the beautiful velvet curtains in the top floor apartment, and suites 1, 2, and 3. We are talking hundreds of yards of velvet here, which I learned can be hard to work with. Molly also covered all the cushions for the built-in benches and church pews on the main and lower levels of the Retreat House. She also made gray cushions for the new lounge furniture my father made on the upper level of the Retreat House terrace and the East Overlook Terrace at the Farm House. Now guests can find a comfortable seat to take in the views inside AND outside! With her help, we chose very neutral and soothing fabrics that tied beautifully with the architectural elements of the homes. And they are gorgeous, and the craftsmanship is unparalleled.

Molly, her husband Glan, and their employee Melissa all tackled this big project with dedication and zeal that I am quite confident can only be found here on the coast of Maine. You can visit On Board Fabrics website, or follow Molly on Facebook. She’s a hoot! On Board Fabrics barn is located on Route 27 leading to Boothbay, at 660 Boothbay Rd. Edgecomb, Maine. Tell Molly that Jesse sent you!

The Retreat House Suite 3: The Gay Bean Dion Suite

The Retreat House Suite 3 at French's Point: Coastal Maine Oceanside Destination Wedding Venue and Family Vacation Home Rental _ Rachael Anderson Photography

As we do almost every winter, this season was spent completing a number of major maintenance and repair projects to keep our beautiful buildings and grounds in top working order. We also completed a major renovation to the bedroom suites on the second and third floors of the Retreat House. I have shared with you the details of the newly refurbished Top Level Apartment in the Retreat House, Suite 1 and Suite 2, both located on the second floor, in recent posts.

The second level of the Retreat House now offers four newly renovated suites with en suite bathrooms and six total bedrooms on this floor. All of the rooms on the top, second level and main floor of the Retreat House have been dedicated to family members and dear friends that played a key role in our stewardship of this property. Suite 3- The Gay Bean Dion Suite is our largest suite with a massive ocean view deck with hammock, hammock chairs, cafe table and chairs to take in the views. The room also offers a sitting area and an en suite bathroom with tub/shower unit.

When we first opened the Retreat House in 2006, I had connected with a childhood friend that had grown up here on the point with my father in the summer times. Her name is Gay Bean Dion. She became a very dear friend and worked very hard to help get the Retreat House up and running. My children know her as “Nanny Gay”. She just recently moved to Rhode Island to be closer to family and we miss her (and her cookies). I dedicated the room to her because she was such a good friend and like a mother to me in some ways. The views from this room really are remarkable, just like Gay. This room is special to me because I lived in it for a time with my wee little girl, Bailey. She learned to walk in this room. Her swinging cradle made by my father used to hang next to my bed and the breeze blowing in from the ocean rocked her to sleep on summer nights.

We will share the details of the other Retreat House Suites  & enhancements in upcoming posts. We hope you love them as much as we do.

What To Wear To A Wedding

Wedding Guest Attire: What to Wear to a Wedding - Wedding Dress Attire Formality _ Greta Tucker Photography

Informing your guests of the level of formality of your wedding day may feel like a daunting task. Our friends at The Black Tux have created a way to make this process a little bit simpler. Once you have chosen your wedding gown, your venue, the vision of the decor, your rentals, and your menu and meal service style,  it is important to educate your guests on what to wear to this celebratory event.  Your guests will thank you for making this clear.

The Use of Pinterest

One way to educate them is through Pinterest. We created an example board called, “Be Our Guest” that helps you envision what we have seen at French’s Point. You can use our board, or create your own to help you guests follow your overall dress formality for your big day. The most popular dress codes we have seen at French’s Point are a mix between Beach Formal and Black Tie Optional where guests are wearing a mixture of florals and heels and summer suits and ties.

Informing Your Guests on Your Wedding Website

Without your guests seeing the decor and all the fine details coming together, the design of the invitation might not be enough to inform them of what to wear. Another way we suggest educating your friends and family about what you wear is on your wedding website or app. You may not have room on your invitation to say more than a couple words about the dress code, but on your website, you can share the definition from The Black Tux or share links to places such as a Pinterest board or blog post.

Don’t Forget to Dress in Layers!

And don’t forget! We always suggest informing your guests that they prepare to dress in layers to accommodate rising and falling temperatures over the course of the day. No matter if you are having a winter, fall, summer or spring celebration, we always want you and your guests to be comfortable for whatever weather that blows our way!
