Real Review: Heaven. Just Heaven.

French's Point Review - Destination Wedding Venue - Coastal Maine Wedding Venue - Amanda McCoy Photography

Jessica & Zachary

Married on October 13th, 2018

Our October wedding at French’s Point was simply amazing. Back in the planning stages, we had plans to tour six or seven other venues, but we canceled all our other tours after we toured French’s Point because we knew we’d just seen something special and that it wouldn’t get any better.

We were right. Everything about the estate is amazing–the location, the view, the estate house itself. It’s warm, welcoming, and elegant. The staff is sweet, encouraging, communicative, and helpful. They provided us with suggestions and inspiration that made our day unique and fun.

If you book the venue, you should also consider booking the adjacent farmhouse for your family and wedding party. It’s a quaint, cozy, and adorable place to stay, but it’s also incredibly handy to have the wedding party within walking distance of the venue. We were so happy we made the choice to book the farmhouse too!

I can’t thank Jessika and Nicole enough; they were amazing, and I get misty just thinking about what a wonderful day they helped us create. I loved everything about it! We even battled a little rain and couldn’t get married outside at the gazebo like we planned, but it didn’t for one second feel like a compromise to get married in the lovely estate. This place is just heaven!

French's Point Real Review - Spring Wedding in Maine - Destination Wedding Venue - Photography by the Light & Color

Melanie & Cornelius

Married on May 26th, 2018

I didn’t know a lot about what I wanted for my wedding but I knew I wanted to be married on the water, but not on sand, because heels and sand don’t mix. Well after searching around, my husband found the perfect wedding venue to fit that criteria, French’s Point in Stockton Springs, Maine. My mom went to go and tour it since we live out on the west coast, and immediately they said that this was the perfect place for us. With gorgeous panoramic views of the bay, and the secluded private event feel, it gave us a breathtaking wedding that we both always desired. From their many fire-pits, to amazing tent, to cozy farmhouse rentals, the property gave us everything and more.

There were a few challenges during the planning period as the venue was going through some major changes at the time and has since altered the way they book the events but the team was very responsive and helpful through many scheduling phone calls. They were patient and understanding of our cross country communication, as we live in CA. Come wedding weekend, we were able to sit back and truly relax as family and friends the way we desired and the team was attentive to all our needs. And when the actual day came, Nicole was there to make sure everything ran smoothly, and hopefully enjoyed the fun times we had during our photo shoot. I would definitely recommend French’s Point as the best authentic Maine wedding destination!

Guest Room Air Conditioning: Domestic Air Conditioning

French's Point: Domestic Air Conditioning in the Retreat House and Farm House - Destination Wedding Venue on the Coast of Maine - Emily Delameter Photography

Guests often ask if we have or need air conditioning at French’s Point. The reality is that the architect Wilfred E. Mansur, who designed the retreat house, did so to take advantage of the near perpetual breezes here. The transom windows over the bedroom doors on the second floor are testament of that. In fact, in some of the rooms at the Retreat House, door hooks are offered near the baseboard to keep open doors from slamming closed in the breeze. The Farm House and the Retreat House are both cited at the highest elevations on the point and if you open a door or window for cross ventilation, the rooms remain quite comfortable most of the time. The exception is the few days in July or August when the air is still and the humidity coupled with higher temperatures does not afford a breeze.

Regardless of the reality, we wanted to be able to assure our guests that their accommodations are comfortable year round. This spring, we partnered with Mike from Domestic Air Conditioning and Refrigeration to bring air conditioning to our guest rooms in both homes. He finished the installation of the system we roughed in in 2005. The Retreat House bed rooms have central air conditioning with the exception of one room in suite 1, which has a window unit. The Farm House bedrooms all have window units with the exception of suite 12 on the lower level that does not need air conditioning, because it always stays comfortable. We are glad to have this amenity to offer to our guests. We know that now they will slumber comfortably, even on the warmest, stillest of summer nights.

The Retreat House Suite 4: The Brewer Family Suite

French's Point - Suite 4 - Retreat House - Family Vacation Home Rental - Destination Wedding Venue in Maine - Greta Tucker Photography

The second level of the Retreat House now offers four newly renovated suites with en suite bathrooms and six total bedrooms on this floor. Suite 4- The Brewer Family Suite, offers a two-bedroom configuration with a queen in each room with an adjoining bath. Our family LOVES this space and we hope other families do too. When I had my first and second babies, we lived in these suites for a time. I love thinking back to those times rocking my sweet little ones with the moon shining in the window.

We will share the details of the other Retreat House enhancements in upcoming posts. We hope you love them as much as we do.

The Retreat House Top-Level Apartment: The Brooks Family Nest

The Retreat House Top Level Apartment: The Brooks Family Nest at French's Point - Coastal Maine Wedding Venue and Vacation Home Rental

As we do almost every winter, the season was spent completing a number of major maintenance and repair projects to keep our beautiful buildings and grounds in top working order. We also completed a major renovation to the bedroom suites on the second and third floors of the Retreat House.

The Top Level Apartment

We updated and refurbished the Top-Level Apartment in the Retreat House to offer it as as cozy nest to guests, with an impressive view of the bay. My parents, Bob and Bonnie made this apartment home for eight years. They hosted many a family dinner, had slumber parties with their grandchildren in the large closets under the eaves of the roofline that they dubbed the “Hobbit Holes” and rested their weary heads after long days of love poured into the property. They loved the gentle breezes, the sound of the rain on the roof and the incredible sunrises and sunsets. My mother lovingly refers to this space as “The Nest”. I think this name is quite appropriate. This winter, they moved just down the road to the Beach Rose Cottage located next to the Farm House with my sweet Grandmama, making way for guests to enjoy this charming apartment.

The privacy that this space offers will give our bridal parties a place to gather, relax and prepare on the wedding day with an open concept kitchen, dining and living space and a waterfront fireplace parlor with a beautiful deck with broad ocean views which is perfect to enjoy a wedding day brunch and watch as the setting below comes to life for your wedding. Just inside from the balcony, the parlor has beautiful natural light and is the perfect place for your hair and make-up artists to set up shop on your wedding day. In the parlor is a tiny sink which was my grandfather, Edgar’s. He loved antiques and saw the beauty in the forgotten. It is a sweet little detail in this space. There are two large, elegant king bedroom suites on this floor as well with sitting areas, beautiful bathrooms and private balconies looking to the east and west. You are going to love the cozy setting, gorgeous views and soothing privacy that the top floor offers you and your nearest and dearest!

We will share the details of the other Retreat House Suites & enhancements in upcoming posts. We hope you love them as much as we do.

What To Wear To A Wedding

Wedding Guest Attire: What to Wear to a Wedding - Wedding Dress Attire Formality _ Greta Tucker Photography

Informing your guests of the level of formality of your wedding day may feel like a daunting task. Our friends at The Black Tux have created a way to make this process a little bit simpler. Once you have chosen your wedding gown, your venue, the vision of the decor, your rentals, and your menu and meal service style,  it is important to educate your guests on what to wear to this celebratory event.  Your guests will thank you for making this clear.

The Use of Pinterest

One way to educate them is through Pinterest. We created an example board called, “Be Our Guest” that helps you envision what we have seen at French’s Point. You can use our board, or create your own to help you guests follow your overall dress formality for your big day. The most popular dress codes we have seen at French’s Point are a mix between Beach Formal and Black Tie Optional where guests are wearing a mixture of florals and heels and summer suits and ties.

Informing Your Guests on Your Wedding Website

Without your guests seeing the decor and all the fine details coming together, the design of the invitation might not be enough to inform them of what to wear. Another way we suggest educating your friends and family about what you wear is on your wedding website or app. You may not have room on your invitation to say more than a couple words about the dress code, but on your website, you can share the definition from The Black Tux or share links to places such as a Pinterest board or blog post.

Don’t Forget to Dress in Layers!

And don’t forget! We always suggest informing your guests that they prepare to dress in layers to accommodate rising and falling temperatures over the course of the day. No matter if you are having a winter, fall, summer or spring celebration, we always want you and your guests to be comfortable for whatever weather that blows our way!

2 Different Styles of Wedding Photography

Styles of Photography: Greta Tucker Photography - Coastal Maine Wedding Photographer Professional
As a newly engaged couple, you have many vendors to book for your wedding day and one of the key professionals is the photographer. This might be the first time you’ve ever hired a professional photographer and not sure where to being your search.
Before you begin the search for the photographer that is perfect for you, you need to know that there are few distinct types of photography: photojournalism, fine art, editorial, traditional… I will talk about two defined styles that are very popular and that primarily describe my own photography style:

Fine Art

Focused on creating works of art with each shot, and usually refers to film photography. It’s all about creating visual art, that is authentic, simple and beautiful.
This type of photography requires the photographer to be more deliberate with each shot, in order to create those heirloom portraits that will appreciate in value with each passing year. This is the style of photography that I love when it comes to bride + groom portraits and the details of a wedding.

Photojournalistic/Documentary

This style is generally characterized by an unposed and organic way of documenting the day as it unfolds. If you hire a photographer, who specializes in the photojournalistic style of wedding photography, you are most likely get the most beautiful, emotional photos. Most of the time your photographer will be ‘invisible” so they can allow the beautiful moments happen organically and capture them as they happen. For assistant photographers, I always choose to work with those, who are great at documenting these type of photos, while I am photographing the bride + groom, bridal party, and family portraits.  They love receiving these images that helots preserve the most precious memories.
Warmly,
Greta

Red Flags When Choosing Your Vendors : Series Part II : They Aren’t a Team Player

Maine Wedding Destination | Maine Wedding Location

As leaders in the destination wedding industry, we have had the chance to work with a wide variety of vendors. From reputable caterers and artistic florists to small part-time wedding bands, we’ve worked with people from every walk of life. The one thing we look for when choosing our preferred vendors, is whether or not they can work seamlessly as a part of our team. This is a characteristic that can’t necessarily be highlighted during an interview or over the phone.

Here are some red flags that your potential vendor isn’t a good team player, and might be more trouble than you asked for.

Red Flags When Choosing Your Vendors : 2- They Aren’t a Team Player

The timeline is the backbone of a great wedding. And every team member needs to share equal ownership of this timeline.

Vendors who specialize in weddings are a special breed. They are not just masters of their creative skill, they are masters of time management. A gorgeous wedding with the most talented vendors will be quickly derailed when a vendor decides to stray from the schedule to take creative freedom.

Although a photographer may be inspired midway through group photos to take the wedding party on a hike to find the perfect natural lighting, the rest of the wedding will be delayed, which means hungry guests, melting cakes and shortened receptions. A band who decided they want to play through their first break so they can jam on their favorite song for 15 minutes means the caterer misses his chance for the cake cutting and they will never get to the father and daughter dance.

In order to find the perfect team of vendors, ask them what experience they have with weddings like yours. Tell them about your overall vision and they will understand how they fit in with the whole picture. I suggest choosing vendors that have worked together in the past and highly recommend each other. A dream team of vendors who are familiar with each other will be able to communicate easily and work out small logistical issues without getting you involved. You should never be pulled away from your big day to answer questions or figure out where vendors are supposed to be.

Finding a trusted vendor means looking beyond creative skills and choosing a group of vendors that work together like a well oiled machine.
