Things To Do: Sail the Bay

The grounds at French’s Point offer breathtaking 280-degree views of Penobscot Bay. Why not make yourself a part of the seascape and check out the other 80 degrees by boat?

The Miss Nina Schooner, moored in nearby Belfast, will whisk you across the waves of Penobscot Bay for half or full-day adventure sails. Customize your own sightseeing trip, or sign up for one of several charter packages aboard Miss Nina, a 61-foot wooden ketch built at the legendary Story Shipyard in Essex, Massachusetts.

Enjoy a three-hour dinner sail from the comfort of the boat’s pilothouse, “the least crowded restaurant in Belfast,” as owners Amy and Dan like to call it. Take in the ocean views over a meal of freshly caught haddock or grilled chicken served with local vegetables, and watch the sunset as you dive into dessert from the local bakery Let Them Eat Cake. Adventurous seafarers can even take a turn at the helm.

Or, if you’re more of an early bird, dig into pancakes and Maine maple syrup for breakfast on the bay.

Prefer a little exercise with your sail? Don’t miss the Yoga Adventure Sail, where you’ll quiet your mind through guided meditation before disembarking for a walk along the island cliffs of Islesboro. After a 90-minute yoga session, feast on an organic lunch as you head home under sail.

If you’d rather hit the trails than practice your plank pose, sign up for a sail to Fort Point State Park, where you’ll stop for a leisurely hike along the park’s trails. Take a swim off the tidal sandbar or collect sea glass along the rocky shore, then head back in time for dinner in town.
